Georgia’s Youngest Mayor Ousted Amid Allegations

Jayden Williams, former mayor of Stockbridge, Georgia, expressed his surprise at being removed from office amid allegations of misconduct. “I didn’t expect this,” Williams mentioned in an interview with WSB-TV. At 23, Williams was the youngest mayor in the state when he assumed office less than a year ago. His term ended prematurely due to accusations related to the misuse of city funds and a relationship with an 18-year-old high school student.

Williams spoke during a Juneteenth event, highlighting the short span of his tenure in office. He acknowledged the inappropriateness of the relationship when pressed by WSB-TV, stating, “I would have to somewhat agree to that.” However, he insisted, “There was no violation of the oath,” clarifying that he was not mayor at the relationship’s onset.

WSB-TV reported that Williams denied any sexual component to the relationship. Yet, NBC News shared that Williams admitted to exchanging nude photos, justifying it as typical for his age during a city council discussion. The police found no criminal activity since the student was legally an adult in Georgia.

Williams also conceded to using funds for personal expenses. He claimed these funds were from the mayor’s allocated $5,000 budget and not the city’s general fund, as per WSB-TV. He emphasized, “It was not intentional and I paid it back immediately.” Williams added that the city’s purchase card resembled his personal card, as reported by Fox 5. Following the incident, he replaced the cards to prevent future mix-ups.

Having campaigned while attending Clark Atlanta University, Williams made history as Georgia’s youngest mayor. His removal was conducted by the Stockbridge City Council in August after his January swearing-in.
