Irish singer-songwriter and Academy Award winner Glen Hansard died following a motorcycle accident in Dublin early Wednesday. He was 56 years old.
ATC Management shared the news, expressing heartbreak over Hansard’s passing. Police confirmed a man in his 50s died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan, near Dublin, around 4:30 a.m. He received treatment at the site but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Authorities are seeking witnesses to the incident.
Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard began his career busking in the city. He made his acting debut in the 1991 film The Commitments, portraying Outspan Foster, a member of a Dublin soul band. Hansard combined music and acting in the 2007 indie film Once, collaborating with Markéta Irglová on the film’s music. They also starred in the film and won an Oscar in 2008 for the song “Falling Slowly.” A Broadway adaptation ran from 2012 to 2015, earning eight Tony Awards.
Off-screen, Hansard was the lead singer of rock band The Frames and performed with Irglová as part of The Swell Season. He released five solo albums, including Didn’t He Ramble, Grammy-nominated for Best Folk Album in 2016.
Hansard frequently appeared on CBS Saturday Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions.” In 2015, he showcased Didn’t He Ramble; in 2018 and 2024, he played songs from other solo albums. In 2025, he and Irglová released Forward, their first album as The Swell Season in 16 years.
Hansard honored Shane MacGowan at his 2023 funeral, performing “Fairytale Of New York” alongside Lisa O’Neill, igniting moments of joy in the church. He led the annual Christmas Eve charity busk at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre for the Dublin Simon Community, advocating against homelessness. The organization expressed devastation at the news of his death, highlighting his generosity and commitment.
He is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son. In a 2023 BBC interview, Hansard reflected on fatherhood, saying it had transformed his life positively.
