Governor Sherrill Joins Protests at New Jersey Immigration Detention Facility

Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat known for her disagreements with the Trump administration on immigration, participated in a protest at a detention center in New Jersey. The protest supported detainees on a hunger strike.

Sherrill demanded entry to Delaney Hall in Newark to hear from detainees’ families. They expressed concerns about poor food quality and inadequate medical care. Protesters carried signs, played drums, and chanted calls for release.

“No matter what your immigration status is, you shouldn’t be treated with anything less than dignity in this country,”

Sherrill stated, wearing casual attire, including a T-shirt, jeans, and a jacket on Memorial Day. She comforted a crying relative and an upset child during the event.

Trump’s immigration policies have sparked nationwide protests, and Sherrill has repeatedly opposed his administration. In April, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Sherrill and New Jersey’s attorney general over a state law that prevents law enforcement, including ICE agents, from wearing masks on duty.

The Delaney Hall detention center, which has 1,000 beds and is privately managed, has become central to Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts. Reopened last year, it houses many immigrants detained in New York City and neighboring areas as agents have increased arrests in homes, courthouses, and federal buildings.

This lawsuit marked at least the second legal challenge the Trump administration brought against Sherrill’s immigration policies.
