Graham Platner Faces Allegations Amidst Senate Campaign

Graham Platner addressed voters at a town hall at the Elks Lodge 188 in Portland, Maine, on June 7, 2026. The event happened amidst growing controversy as Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate, faces serious allegations.

Politico reported on claims from a former girlfriend, alleging an incident in 2021 where Platner entered her Maine home while inebriated and coerced her into sexual activity despite her protests. NPR has not verified these accusations, but Platner strongly refutes them. In a statement, he said, “These allegations are troubling, serious, and false.” His campaign echoed this denial, labeling the accusations as “coached and coordinated by out-of-state operatives.” The campaign emphasized their commitment to Platner’s vision for Maine.

Platner shared a video online acknowledging potential political repercussions from these allegations. “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, we are reflecting on the best path forward,” he stated. This situation complicates Democratic plans to reclaim a Senate majority in the upcoming elections. With the party requiring four more seats, Maine’s race is crucial; President Trump did not win there in 2024, making incumbent Susan Collins vulnerable.

Platner’s campaign has been marred by previous scandals. In June, The New York Times shared accounts from three of Platner’s former partners describing him as demeaning and occasionally threatening. Platner admitted to struggling with alcohol during that period, but denied other claims.

The Wall Street Journal disclosed Platner’s past explicit communications with women early in his marriage. His campaign confirmed this report. Additionally, Platner has dealt with resurfaced Reddit posts containing insensitive comments about minorities and assault victims. He also once had a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, which he has since altered.

Platner often discusses his military-induced PTSD, presenting it as proof of his genuine nature. “Here in Maine, voters know I am authentic,” he told NPR. Despite this, some Democrats have urged Platner to withdraw from the race. If Platner exits by July 13, Maine Democrats still have time to nominate a new candidate for the general election, with a political committee having until July 27 for selection.
