Graham Platner, running for the Senate in Maine, is under scrutiny after reports emerged about his past actions. The Wall Street Journal revealed that Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, disclosed to campaign officials that he sent explicit messages to several women shortly after their 2023 marriage. This disclosure comes as Platner gains attention in the polls against Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
Gertner expressed her feelings of betrayal and privacy invasion following the revelations by a former staff member. Despite these personal challenges, she affirmed her support for her husband. Newsweek reached out to Platner’s campaign for comment on the situation.
Political Landscape in Maine
Maine is a swing state with a history of electing both Democrats and moderate Republicans. This race, labeled a ‘toss-up’ by the Cook Political Report, is critical as Democrats aim to flip Collins’ seat for a Senate majority. Supported by Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Platner is a key contender after Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the race.
Platner’s campaign has faced challenges, including controversies over past Reddit posts with offensive content and a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism. Platner apologized and attributed these actions to struggles with PTSD after his military tenure.
Revelations and Campaign Strategy
A report revealed that Gertner informed campaign aides last August about Platner’s explicit texts. This was intended as a proactive measure during an internal vetting process. Gertner and Platner have been open about their struggles with fertility and marriage counseling.
Genevieve McDonald, a former campaign director, stated Platner had sent messages to several women, and his actions stopped before the campaign began. McDonald, who resigned over separate controversies, emphasized the need for leadership with integrity.
Polls and Public Opinion
According to a new University of New Hampshire poll, Platner leads Collins with 51% to her 42%. The number of undecided voters has decreased since earlier in the year. Independent voters are split, showing a competitive race.
A Pan Atlantic Research poll also indicated Platner’s 7-point lead over Collins. As the race narrows with Mills’ exit, Platner’s campaign continues to attract attention and support.
A poll by Maine People’s Resource Center had Platner leading Collins by 9 points, while a March Emerson College poll showed a similar 7-point advantage for Platner.
