A gunshot rang out during a fight near Notre Dame’s campus in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday night, injuring a woman and a police officer. This occurred around 7:30 p.m. ET as crowds were leaving tailgating spots and heading to Eddy Street Commons.
Authorities reported that Notre Dame Police informed them of a man seen with a gun, pointing it at people. However, when South Bend Police located a suspect matching the description, he was unarmed.
South Bend Police stated on Facebook that as around 20 officers were present in Eddy Street Commons responding to the call, a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Officers found a woman with a non-life-threatening leg wound and a police officer injured by what was likely a ricochet or shrapnel.
“Both victims were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. The officer is reportedly ‘doing fine,’ and the woman is ‘okay.'”
Notre Dame officials revealed that the suspected shooter fled west from the scene. Descriptions given indicate the suspect is a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks, wearing blue shorts, a black shirt with red and blue designs, and missing one shoe.
The police are actively searching for the shooter as the South Bend Police Department shut down Eddy Street Commons for a detailed investigation. This area, popular with postgame crowds, was evacuated as police secured the scene.
Fox News Digital reached out to the South Bend Police Department for more information, but there was no additional comment beyond their Facebook statement.
Another shooting later that night, roughly a mile away, left at least two people dead and another critically injured. Police have not indicated a connection between the two incidents.
