Haitian Student’s Tragic Death Highlights Impact of Immigration Policies

A college student of Haitian descent in Ohio, identified as Pierre Damas Bel, died in an incident that his family considers a suicide. This followed the Trump administration’s decision to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, impacting his immigration status.

Bel, 20, passed away on Monday. He reportedly walked into oncoming traffic after parking his car on the shoulder of Interstate 70. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed his death at the scene and stated that the investigation is ongoing.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed sorrow over the event, describing it as a terrible tragedy. DeWine pointed out Bel’s positive aspirations and his involvement in junior ROTC as indications of the young man’s potential contributions to the country.

“He graduated from high school here,” DeWine said. “He was well liked and had great dreams about what he could do and contribute to this country.”

Bel’s family shared their distress over his death with the Haitian Times. His father mentioned his son’s distress over wearing an ankle monitor, a condition imposed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Supreme Court had previously allowed the administration to end Haiti’s TPS, affecting roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals.

Pastor Carl Ruby, reading a statement from Bel’s father, shared that Bel seemed unrecognizable in his final days, losing the energy that characterized him. Bel himself had publicly voiced his feelings of shame and humiliation from wearing a GPS ankle monitor, although he came to the U.S. to pursue education and sports.

Springfield Pastor Ruby criticized the immigration policies linked to President Trump’s administration, suggesting these had played a role in Bel’s death. According to Ruby, the family believes that the pressures from these policies contributed to Pierre’s tragic decision.

The local Haitian community, including many long-term residents, faces challenges due to conditions in Haiti, which experiences consistent violence and poverty. ICE stated they would not comment on the investigation or related claims until it concludes.

Bel had graduated from high school and planned to start at Wright State University. Due to his ankle monitor, he could not join the college soccer team, which added to his distress. Wright State University President Sue Edwards expressed their grief over the loss of a student engaged in academics and the campus community.
