Democratic Representative Haley Stevens has endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race, causing significant backlash from her party. The endorsement comes as a surprise, given Stevens’ previous position as a moderate establishment candidate in the primary against Abdul El-Sayed.
Top Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, have publicly criticized Stevens’ decision. Schumer deemed the endorsement a ‘despicable betrayal,’ emphasizing his support for El-Sayed as the party’s nominee.
Following Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers, Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign experienced an unprecedented fundraising boost. On Sunday, the campaign reported raising over $2.4 million, setting a record in the final stages of the race. The contribution came from more than 65,000 donors, with an average donation of $36.74.
El-Sayed’s campaign has gained momentum, with many first-time contributors supporting his bid for the Senate. Campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak noted that the campaign’s energy and commitment among Michiganders are at an all-time high.
In her video message on X, Stevens expressed her pride in being a Democrat but cited concerns over El-Sayed’s association with Hasan Piker, a radical left-wing political streamer, as a reason for her endorsement of Rogers. Despite the criticism, Stevens remains committed to her principles and her love for Michigan.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel has condemned Stevens’ decision, asserting that she has abandoned the values she once stood for. The Democratic Party remains united behind El-Sayed and continues to campaign vigorously in the lead-up to the election.
El-Sayed, focusing on voter outreach and policy, has dismissed the endorsement drama, stating he aims to concentrate on the issues important to Michiganders. He has also distanced himself from Piker following scrutiny and controversy surrounding the streamer’s statements.
