Far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has expressed strong support for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as his preferred presidential candidate for 2028. During a conversation with Mehdi Hasan, Piker shared his belief that Ocasio-Cortez could energize the Democratic base and attract new voters.
When asked to choose between Ocasio-Cortez or Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., Piker decisively backed the congresswoman from New York. “AOC. It’s not even a question,” Piker stated during the Zeteo interview. The discussion covered multiple Democratic figures, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Despite acknowledging potential hurdles such as race and gender, Piker remains optimistic about Ocasio-Cortez’s candidacy. He emphasized her ability to inspire voters through her moral conviction and ability to build a unique coalition.
Piker believes that Ocasio-Cortez can activate those who typically don’t participate in elections, drawing a comparison to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., whose campaign brought democratic socialism further into mainstream politics. Piker sees Ocasio-Cortez as possibly a more effective candidate than Sanders.
However, Piker also critiqued Ocasio-Cortez’s approach to political presentation. He noted her proficiency on social media and her willingness to adopt progressive stances but suggested she focuses too much on optics.
Ocasio-Cortez has not declared any intention to run in 2028, although she has increased her national presence and involvement in campaign activities, including advocating for progressive candidates like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.
