Hawaii Man Charged with Multiple Murders and Other Crimes

A suspect implicated in the killing of three elderly men in Hawaii faces multiple charges, including murder, as authorities confirmed on Sunday. Jacob Baker, a 36-year-old resident of Pahoa, Hawaii, is accused of one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder related to the alleged slayings on Hawaii’s Big Island.

In addition to murder charges, Baker is charged with several counts of burglary, criminal property damage, theft, and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department. A booking photo from May 29, 2026, shows Baker in custody. Authorities detailed that he remains held without bond on the murder charges.

Baker’s arrest last Thursday followed a state and federal manhunt during which he was labeled “armed and extremely dangerous.” The suspect faces charges linked to incidents occurring over two days.

The deceased were identified by police as Robert Shine (69), John Carse (69), and an unnamed 79-year-old man. All were discovered deceased in residences in Pahoa. Shine’s body was partially submerged in a nearby cement pond, while the 79-year-old was found a few hundred feet away. Carse’s remains were located approximately 19 miles from the others.

Baker was captured in Kalapana, about 10 miles from Pahoa. Surveillance footage played a critical role, showing a man resembling Baker attempting to conceal himself in a vacant lot. Witnesses also reported spotting him ducking as vehicles passed by. Police ultimately captured him hiding in a small cave on a nearby property, as detailed by Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna.

The police have not disclosed how Baker was identified as a suspect or his potential motives. Investigators have yet to find links between the victims, except that two of them resided in close proximity to each other.
