High School Prom Reunites ASPIRA Students Amid School Closures

Jesus Lara stepped into a transformed Chicago Teachers Union headquarters, searching for familiar faces. Dressed in a black suit and silk tie, he examined the room adorned with blue drapery and yellow lights highlighting the word “prom.” A smile spread across his face as he spotted his friends.

Lara, 18, found himself in the same space with friends and classmates from ASPIRA Business & Finance High School, a rare occurrence in recent months. Like many of his peers, Lara had spent the past few months at a new high school due to significant changes.

School Charter Revocation

Lara’s transition to Lake View High School arose from the Chicago Board of Education’s decision in March to revoke the charter from his previous school network. Allegations of “systemic fiscal mismanagement” led to this decision, as they ran out of funding, stated CPS officials. ASPIRA leadership disagreed, blaming financial issues on declining enrollment and rising labor costs.

As a result, ASPIRA Business & Finance and ASPIRA Early College High School closed, displacing approximately 570 students. The senior students were forced to start fresh at new schools, disrupting longstanding friendships.

Reunion at CTU Headquarters

Thursday night’s prom event, organized by CPS and CTU, allowed Lara and his peers to reunite. “It feels nice to see them again,” Lara remarked. Many students shared his sentiment, having felt disconnected in new environments.

The evening fulfilled what many had planned for prom during the school year—a joyful occasion with their classmates. Esmeralda Navichoque, 18, who moved to Schurz High School, described the experience as “weird” but found comfort in reconnecting with former classmates.

Sentiments Among Seniors

Melody Diaz, another senior, transferred to Theodore Roosevelt High School. She found making deep connections difficult with limited time remaining. For such students, this prom embodied long-standing friendships and closure.

The event aimed to provide ASPIRA seniors with an opportunity to celebrate their time together before graduating, explained CTU Charter Division Chair Jennifer Conant. Approximately 70 students attended, enjoying a night of dance and Italian dining.

The venue, selected for its convenience and spaciousness, also welcomed ASPIRA teachers and staff who served as chaperones, fostering a familiar atmosphere for former students.

Reflecting on High School Transitions

The prom offered ASPIRA seniors a contemplative moment amidst their disrupted routines. Although receiving schools warmly welcomed them, the consistency and stability of their previous experience were difficult to replicate.

Among those feeling this duality was Yuriel Garcia, 18, who transferred to Schurz. The night allowed him to reconnect with past classmates, forging new memories and experiencing a unique celebration honoring their shared history.
