Sports Flashback: June 8, 1971

On this date, Peoria-raised catcher Danny Goodwin, originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox, made headlines. Although the White Sox selected him with the No. 1 draft pick, Goodwin chose not to sign and instead pursued college baseball at Southern University. In 1975, the California Angels drafted him first overall, and Goodwin went on to enjoy a seven-year major league career.

The National Weather Service in Chicago notes significant weather records for June 8:

  • Highest temperature: 97 degrees in 1933
  • Lowest temperature: 42 degrees in 1885
  • Precipitation: 2.07 inches in 1958
  • Snowfall: Trace in 2015

Innovation in Cleaning: 1869

Chicago inventor Ives W. McGaffey was awarded a patent for a revolutionary ‘sweeping machine,’ an early type of vacuum cleaner. His model, while lightweight and compact, required a tricky hand crank and came with a steep price of $25. Many units were thought to be lost in the Chicago Fire of 1871.

Bobby Orr Joins the Blackhawks: 1976

On September 17, 1976, famed Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr began his journey with the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite chronic knee issues limiting his playing time, Orr transitioned to a coaching role in 1978, contributing further to the team.

Patrick Kane’s Memorable Goal: 2013

In a defining moment for the Chicago Blackhawks, Patrick Kane scored his third goal in double overtime against the Los Angeles Kings to clinch the Western Conference title. Kane, supported by fellow player Jonathan Toews, described the experience as surreal.

Steppenwolf Theatre’s Triumph: 2025

The Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production ‘Purpose,’ written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, achieved significant recognition with two Tony Awards, including Best Play, and a Pulitzer Prize. The production later moved to Broadway in 2025.
