House Approves Bill to Limit Stock Purchases by Lawmakers

The House of Representatives has passed a bill intended to curb stock trading by members of Congress. The legislation seeks to prevent lawmakers, their spouses, and dependent children from purchasing individual stocks in the future.

While the bill stops lawmakers from buying new stocks, it permits them to retain and sell any stocks they currently possess. This compromise aims to address concerns about potential conflicts of interest while allowing existing investments to be managed.

An additional provision requiring voter ID has introduced some uncertainty about the bill’s future in the Senate. This aspect may affect its chances of becoming law.

Furthermore, the legislation mandates that lawmakers disclose plans to sell covered investments at least seven days and no more than 14 days before the transaction. This requirement is designed to ensure transparency and accountability in stock transactions by those holding public office.
