Prominent House Democrats were caught off guard by a new plan from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The proposal aims to overhaul America’s political system. It suggests eliminating the Senate, the president, and the Supreme Court.
Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., expressed his disapproval, stating, “I don’t support that.” He added that he had not read the proposal. The DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” plan proposes to abolish the Senate and replace the president and Supreme Court with an executive branch and judiciary elected by Congress.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., one of Congress’s most progressive members, avoided answering questions about the DSA’s new agenda. Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., also refrained from commenting, saying, “I’m not a member of the DSA.” The DSA platform includes a call for a unicameral, proportional legislature and a parliamentary system.
The proposed platform calls for the abolition of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and pardoning all immigrants, including those with criminal convictions. It also suggests defunding the Department of War. The DSA has publicly advocated for ICE’s abolition since 2018 and seeks other immigration reforms, such as ending deportations and granting full voting rights to noncitizens and people with criminal records.
This far-left agenda is gaining traction within the Democratic party. Several socialist candidates are winning over moderate Democrats in primary elections. Aguilar expressed confidence in working with new Democratic colleagues.
In the Democratic Left’s statement, the DSA outlined conditions for candidate endorsements. Candidates must align their platforms with the “Workers Deserve More” agenda to gain DSA support. House Democrats like Omar, Khanna, and Aguilar stated they either had not read the proposal or declined to comment on it.
