Four Republican members of the House departed from President Donald Trump and the majority of their party by voting with Democrats to pass a resolution. The aim of the resolution is to prevent further U.S. military activities in Iran unless Congress explicitly authorizes them.
The representatives who backed the measure include Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania, Warren Davidson from Ohio, Tom Barrett from Michigan, and Thomas Massie from Kentucky. This bipartisan effort led to the resolution passing with a vote of 214 to 208.
Earlier, in June, these same Republicans opposed Trump’s war powers concerning Iran. Their decision on Thursday signifies a growing bipartisan resistance against the administration as tensions in the Middle East rise.
Although largely symbolic, the resolution indicates a shift in Republican unity. It reflects the increasing concern within Capitol Hill about the conflict with Iran. The Senate is expected to deliberate on a similar resolution later on Thursday.
