Hungary is experiencing significant political changes following the extensive tenure of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. His successor, Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who unseated Orbán in an April election, aims to eradicate corruption, liberalize state institutions, and strengthen alliances with European countries.
The new government’s approach has prompted some to consider whether Hungary’s changes could serve as a model for the United States in a potential post-Trump era. However, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, unrelated to the previous prime minister, emphasized that fostering a strong relationship with the U.S. remains a priority.
“The relationship between the two countries is solid,” said Anita Orbán during an interview at the United Nations General Assembly. “The main alliance is NATO, and the new Hungarian government seeks an intensive, solid partnership with the U.S.”
She noted that the government plans to build upon agreements established by the former Hungarian administration with the Trump administration. The emphasis on continuity is clear, particularly in terms of diplomatic relations.
Conservative Stance
Anita Orbán outlined that despite strains between Trump and some European countries, Hungary intends to maintain its conservative values. This aligns with Trump’s views on issues such as defense contributions, economic policies, and migration.
The former Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, was closely aligned with Trump’s international outlook. He often criticized the European Union for its globalist tendencies and maintained close relations with Russia, much like Trump did during his presidency.
Despite U.S. support for Viktor Orbán’s re-election bid, Donald Trump has expressed confidence in Péter Magyar, describing him as capable of doing a “good job.” Anita Orbán indicated Hungary’s intent to uphold shared values, focusing on the protection of children and families and addressing illegal migration.
National Interests and EU Relations
The Magyar administration is navigating the balance between Hungarian national interests and collaboration with the European Union. The EU and NATO remain priorities, but Hungary will assert its own interests when necessary.
“We are going to represent the national interest of Hungary,” Anita Orbán stated. “We wish to return as a trusted, constructive partner to the EU and NATO, but this does not mean we won’t defend our national interests.”
Under the new administration, emphasis will be placed on domestic initiatives such as economic rejuvenation, education access, and healthcare improvement.
Addressing External Threats
Europe is facing internal political shifts and external threats, particularly from Russia. European leaders have raised concerns over potential escalations from Moscow. Despite these tensions, Trump has called for European allies to increase their own security contributions.
Hungary has already exceeded the NATO defense budget guideline and intends to support alliance unity and territorial integrity. The administration is taking a firm stance on Russian interference, which they attribute to past pro-Viktor Orbán campaigns.
Even after the expulsion of Russian diplomats, Hungary maintains diplomatic channels with Russia, as it remains a significant regional influence and energy supplier.
