Hurricane Polo is projected to move north along Mexico’s coast in the coming days. Forecasters caution that the system may escalate to a “catastrophic” category 5 hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) provided an update on Tuesday, indicating Hurricane Polo’s position roughly 215 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The hurricane is traveling east-southeast at about six miles per hour.
The storm is anticipated to shift toward the northwest on Tuesday night into Wednesday. It is expected to approach Mexico’s southwestern coast in the coming days but should remain offshore.
The NHC reported that Polo’s maximum sustained winds have risen to approximately 150 mph. “Polo is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Continued rapid intensification is forecast, and Polo could become a Category 5 hurricane later today,” stated the agency.
