On Wednesday, Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar addressed allegations of her involvement in a widespread fraud scheme. These claims arose after Vice President JD Vance mentioned that the Department of Justice (DOJ) was investigating her.
Omar issued a statement to Newsweek following accusations by the alleged architect of a $250 million meals scam. The allegations asserted that Omar participated in the conspiracy, intensifying previous claims by some members of the Trump administration that the Representative was involved in various fraudulent activities, including immigration fraud.
Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false,” Omar stated. “The moment this fraud came to light, I immediately sent a letter to the USDA Secretary demanding answers and accountability. As I stated from the beginning, stealing millions of dollars under the guise of feeding hungry children to bankroll lavish lifestyles and extravagant expenses is reprehensible.
Newsweek contacted the DOJ for further comments on Wednesday afternoon.
Allegations Against Omar: Key Points
Aimee Bock, the founder of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, was convicted of conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud in March. She stated in a jail interview that Omar was complicit in the scam. The fraud involved restaurant owners filing fake or inflated claims during the pandemic, siphoning millions in child nutrition funds.
Bock told The New York Post in a video interview, I struggle to believe that she wouldn’t have known.
She also claimed she did not knowingly take part in the fraud and attempted to alert officials.
The MEALS Act and Omar’s Allegations
Omar introduced the MEALS Act to Congress in March 2020. This act enabled the U.S. Department of Agriculture to issue waivers for school meal requirements. Bock alleged that Omar stepped in when waivers expired, allowing fraud to persist. Omar consistently denied any misconduct.
The MEALS Act was signed into law by President Trump and passed with bipartisan support as part of a broader legislative package,” Omar said. “Trump’s USDA Secretary set the regulatory framework during the rollout of the program.
Omar expressed gratitude that Bock and others involved in the fraudulent scheme are being held accountable for defrauding taxpayers and betraying vulnerable children.
Fraud in Minnesota
A report by Minnesota state representatives last week accused Governor Tim Walz’s administration of enabling an environment conducive to fraud, resulting in billions in tax losses. The report also pointed to Omar concerning the MEALS Act consequences.
Launched by the Biden administration in 2022, a federal investigation led to 57 convictions related to the alleged fraud.
Ongoing Criticism from Vance and Trump
The Minnesota fraud case and Omar’s purported involvement have attracted scrutiny from prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Omar has denied allegations of committing immigration fraud by marrying her brother, accusations without confirmed evidence.
Trump previously called for Omar to be denaturalized and deported, and there are congressional efforts to expel members not born in the U.S. Vance recently reiterated that the DOJ would investigate Omar, raising similar immigration fraud claims.
During a White House press conference, Vance stated, We’re going to investigate it. We’re going to take a look at it. If we think that there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime. And that’s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.
Pending Investigation
An official DOJ investigation has yet to be announced. Bock awaits sentencing, with prosecutors seeking a significant prison term.
