Illegal Migrant Cases Stir Calls for Accountability

Arrest in Virginia Stabbing Case

Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, an illegal migrant, has been arrested for the tragic stabbing of Carmen Lizet Puch on a hiking trail in Great Falls, Virginia. The case has drawn attention to immigration policies and accountability issues. Former Secret Service agent Charles Marino discussed the suspect’s previous release by the Biden administration on ‘Fox & Friends First,’ demanding more oversight.

New York Attack on Off-Duty Officer

Federal officials reported that Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia Bautista, 24, both Dominican citizens living illegally in the U.S., attacked off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes. They attempted to steal his gold chain while he cleared his car trunk. Despite being stabbed and slashed, Detective Mercedes pursued them for two blocks before collapsing.

Details of the Incident

Detective Mercedes was hospitalized with severe injuries but has since been released. The attackers remain at large. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized open border policies, arguing the crime was preventable. He urged New York authorities to cooperate in capturing these dangerous individuals.

Suspects’ Background Information

DHS revealed both suspects entered the U.S. unlawfully through Arizona at different times. Their extensive criminal records in New York include various charges:

  • Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo: Reckless endangerment, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing from a police officer, possession of burglar’s tools, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminal possession of a weapon. He was released after a December 2024 arrest, before ICE could lodge an immigration detainer.
  • Sneider Mejia Bautista: Criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar’s tools, grand larceny, and criminal possession of a weapon. A detainer was lodged after a 2025 weapon charge, but local officials declined due to sanctuary policies.

ICE faced challenges lodging detainers promptly for Bautista due to quick releases. The cases have increased scrutiny on the coordination between local authorities and federal immigration agencies under sanctuary policies.
