As the World Cup approached, some fans and participants faced hurdles entering the United States due to strict immigration policies. Complaints arose from many who expressed frustrations over these restrictions.
Among those affected was Iraqi soccer player Aymen Hussein. Known for his exceptional skills, Hussein faced a tense situation upon arriving in the U.S. Detained temporarily by immigration officials at Chicago’s O’Hare airport, he feared his World Cup dreams might end before they began. Hours later, he was permitted to join his team at their camp.
However, Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan wasn’t as lucky. Detained and held in a cell, Artan, one of the select group of roughly 50 World Cup referees, was ultimately deported. His situation highlighted how U.S. immigration policies could threaten the tournament.
These incidents have intensified scrutiny on Washington’s immigration policies, seen by many as increasingly stringent under the Trump administration. The United States, a host of the World Cup for the first time in decades, promised inclusivity when awarded this opportunity back in 2018, but these experiences have renewed concerns about entry difficulties.
Immigration barriers erupted as a notable issue on the eve of the tournament, counteracting assurances made by soccer’s governing body, FIFA. Gianni Infantino, FIFA president and known ally of President Trump, had previously claimed the entry process would be straightforward and smooth.
