The administration’s current focus on expediting deportations has led to a significant increase in the caseloads of immigration judges. This approach, while intended to streamline processes, raises concerns among immigrant attorneys who fear it may compromise due process rights.
Rising Caseloads
As part of new measures, judges often hear more than 100 cases every day during mega immigration hearings. These sessions are now starting in several major cities nationwide. The aim is to process cases more quickly, but the effectiveness and fairness of these proceedings are under scrutiny.
San Antonio Court Example
Judge Cynthia LaFuente-Gaona, working at the San Antonio Immigration Court, is accustomed to handling a few dozen cases per day. Her courtroom is a place where individuals and families from various backgrounds seek permission to remain in the U.S. This already challenging job is becoming more intense as the number of cases increases significantly.
