In Matteson, Illinois, local egg farmers like Marty Thomas face financial challenges due to falling egg prices. Despite an increase in egg supply leading to lower consumer prices, farmers struggle with high production costs. This situation forces them to adapt to the changing market.
In Texas, more than 1.7 million free eggs have already been delivered to food banks, with another 5.3 million expected soon. This effort is part of an antitrust settlement involving three major egg producers, announced by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The settlement follows claims made by the Department of Justice and state attorneys general that these companies unlawfully inflated egg prices between 2022 and 2025.
Under this agreement, in addition to donating over 7 million eggs, the companies will pay $3.3 million to various states involved in the settlement. Paxton stated, “After securing 7 million eggs for the people of Texas, I am excited to announce that Texans will now have an opportunity to receive cartons of free eggs in communities across the state.” He emphasized his commitment to support families struggling with food costs.
The free egg distribution is coordinated by Feeding Texas, involving 17 food banks. The Houston Food Bank will receive the largest share, 1,544,400 eggs. Other major recipients include the North Texas Food Bank in Plano and the Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth, each obtaining 842,400 eggs. Additional participating locations span cities such as Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso.
Current details on the exact timing and eligibility criteria for receiving the eggs are not yet available. A spokesperson for Feeding Texas did not respond to inquiries about distribution specifics.
