The NFL summer training camps are in full swing. Players are battling not just the heat, but also each other for spots on the team. These competitions can lead to tense moments, especially during joint practices between teams.
Such tension was evident when the Dallas Cowboys faced off against the New Orleans Saints during a practice in Oxnard, California. Reports highlight a series of altercations that started small and eventually escalated.
“Right now,” said Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer, reflecting on the situation, “I’m in charge of fight club.”
The practice saw multiple skirmishes, culminating in a full-fledged brawl. Players from both teams exchanged punches, with some opting to throw helmets, rather than fists, to make their point.
One notable incident involved Saints tight end Brock Rechsteiner, who used a wrestling move on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. This connection to wrestling is personal for Rechsteiner, whose father is WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner.
As tensions grew, officials removed Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku from the field for throwing a punch. Cowboys cornerback Caelen Carson was also seen engaging in the fray via video footage captured by local media. Meanwhile, Saints center Erik McCoy was noted for attempting to throw a Cowboy player’s helmet, though it didn’t travel far.
Afterward, Saints linebacker Pete Werner commented on the melee. “You don’t want punches thrown,” he said. “But you want your guys protecting each other. There’s a part of it that’s good, another where it’s, ‘Let’s be smart.'”
Coaches expect professional conduct during these sessions. The fights disrupted the practice session and disappointed those hoping for productive, skill-honing work.
Coach Schottenheimer called the session “unfortunate,” expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome. Despite the day’s events, no further joint practice is planned between the Cowboys and the Saints. The Saints will travel to face the Rams next.
