U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee recently introduced Guatemala at the City of David, highlighting the shared historical roots discovered there. When reflecting on the origins of the United States, locations like Plymouth Rock and Independence Hall are often mentioned. However, the Founding Fathers drew inspiration from places far beyond these landmarks.
In October 2020, the United States officially acknowledged the City of David, the historical site of biblical Jerusalem, as an American heritage site. This recognition extends beyond geographic boundaries, emphasizing its importance to American heritage. Similarly, Argentina’s President Javier Milei recognized the City of David in 2025 for its inspirational role in his nation. Guatemala followed suit, joining these nations in acknowledging its significance.
The moral foundation of the United States is deeply rooted in Jerusalem’s biblical heritage.
Values such as equality before the law and freedom of speech originated in Jerusalem. These ideals replaced previous norms where rulers were above the law. In biblical accounts, figures like King David demonstrated accountability and justice, setting an example for future leaders. Thomas Paine highlighted this in ‘Common Sense,’ where he argued that in America, the law reigns supreme.
Jeremiah’s story exemplifies the courage to challenge authority. Despite persecution, his message had a lasting impact. Discoveries in the City of David, such as seals belonging to figures like Jehucal and Gedaliah, validate these ancient narratives. The principles of free speech and dissent that are celebrated in America have their origins here.
Prominent figures like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson recognized the divine right to freedom and equality. The concept that all humans possess inherent worth, originating in Genesis, found its first national representation in Jerusalem. The Bible influenced America’s founding more than philosophers like Locke and Montesquieu.
By honoring the City of David, nations are not solely acknowledging Israel and the Jewish people. They are connecting with the foundational ideals rooted in Jerusalem that have shaped their societies. In 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted these connections, affirming that foundational ideas were deeply entrenched in ancient teachings from Jerusalem.
As America looks towards its future, it considers the enduring source of its ideals and purpose. Jerusalem offers timeless lessons that remain vital in today’s world.
