Former Israeli National Security Council chief Eyal Hulata has been analyzing a recent incident involving FlyDubai flight traveling from Dubai to Israel. During the flight, an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain. Hulata described the events that led to passengers restraining the suspect after the cockpit door was unlocked, allowing an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Reports indicate that the co-pilot, previously grounded by Oman Air in 2024, had been visiting radical Islamic websites. It is believed that the co-pilot relocated to Dubai within that same year. A source mentioned that he had spent significant time outside Oman, including with his Syrian mother. Notably, FlyDubai did not verify the co-pilot’s history with Oman Air before hiring him.
Incident Details and Response
The alleged attack took place on FlyDubai Flight 1073 en route to Tel Aviv. During the incident, the plane entered a steep dive, nearly causing a catastrophic crash. Two reserve pilots managed to regain control and redirect the aircraft to Saudi Arabia. Passengers and crew assisted in overpowering the suspect.
On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled the incident as terrorism, highlighting that the attacker underwent “Islamic radicalization.” Netanyahu emphasized the threat posed by such radicalization, suggesting the attacker intended to crash the plane with all aboard.
The investigation is being led by the United Arab Emirates. Israeli authorities are also probing whether the suspect had external assistance. A UAE spokesperson refrained from commenting on the suspect’s background, aiming to maintain the investigation’s integrity.
Security Repercussions
The incident has intensified scrutiny on pilot vetting procedures and aviation security on flights to and from Israel. Security analysts have pointed to this event as a major security lapse, questioning the oversight that allowed the co-pilot access to the cockpit.
In response to the incident, FlyDubai has halted flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv. A request for comment from FlyDubai was not immediately addressed.
The unfolding situation underscores the ongoing concerns regarding aviation safety in politically sensitive regions.
