The U.S. Park Police has released CCTV images and video from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as part of an ongoing “destruction of government property” investigation. They are asking the public to help identify a person seen near the water.
The agency shared stills and footage from June 19, showing an individual kneeling by the pool and reaching into the water around 3:30 p.m. The person has not been described as a suspect, nor has their gender been specified. Authorities aim to identify this individual in connection with the investigation.
“Anyone with information regarding the identity of this individual is asked to contact the United States Park Police Tip Line: [email protected] or (202) 379-4877.”
This request occurs amid increased security at the site following former President Donald Trump’s claims that the newly renovated pool was damaged by vandalism.
Trump’s Vandalism Claims
Trump declared the Reflecting Pool had been “gruesomely vandalized,” mentioning damage such as cuts to the pool’s lining and chemical use. He later told supporters he visited the site, noting it already looked “perfect.” Trump stated those responsible had “largely been caught and are being prosecuted.”
While images and video have now been made public, the footage does not demonstrate the damage described by Trump. Officials have not provided evidence supporting those specific claims regarding the scale or origins of the issues.
Existing Issues at the Reflecting Pool
The investigation adds to an ongoing controversy that started when the Reflecting Pool reopened after a fast-tracked renovation ordered by Trump earlier this year. He called for the pool to be resurfaced in “American flag blue,” citing neglect. By early June, the administration presented the project as complete, yet issues arose rapidly. Algae blooms turned the water green, and parts of the blue coating began peeling from the basin floor.
Administration officials have cited alleged vandalism as a cause for some issues. However, the problems’ timing raised questions, with visible issues becoming apparent soon after reopening. The cause remains disputed, with experts suggesting factors like residual algae, water conditions, surface temperature, moisture, adhesion issues, chemical treatments, and environmental stress could contribute.
Security at the landmark has heightened recently. Fencing has been placed around portions of the pool, and law enforcement, including U.S. Park Police, is more evident. The Interior Department had previously stated the barriers were scheduled before the Independence Day festivities, but they were erected early due to concerns about further damage.
