The National Park Service has begun a criminal investigation following the discovery of large numbers stained into the grass near the Washington Monument. The vandalism, visible from a web camera atop the monument, has drawn attention due to its possible political implications.
On Thursday, the U.S. Park Police reported finding the numbers “86 47” imprinted on the verdant expanse extending from the Washington Monument to the World War II Memorial. This area is a prominent gathering space within the nation’s capital.
The term “86” is often used as slang to mean dismissing or removing someone. In some cases, it can imply more severe actions such as killing or eliminating. The Trump administration, aware of this context, has associated the phrase with calls for the removal or assassination of President Trump. He currently holds the office as the 47th president, in addition to having served as the 45th president.
Though the origin of the stains remains unclear, officials noted that significant efforts were made to create the discoloration. This act of vandalism occurred shortly before President Trump plans to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event near the White House, coinciding with his 80th birthday.
The U.S. Park Police stated they began their investigation after being alerted to the incident at 11:30 a.m. on the west lawn of the Washington Monument. Authorities are working to determine who was responsible for the act and what substance might have been used.
