The U.S. Park Police is asking for public help to identify a person seen on camera in connection to damage to the Reflecting Pool and other government property in Washington, D.C. The incident took place on Friday around 3:36 p.m. at the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial.
Footage released by the police shows an individual kneeling by the Reflecting Pool and putting an arm into the water. The person has dark hair and wore a gray shirt and black shorts, while carrying a light-colored handbag.
Police mention President Donald Trump’s earlier effort to refurbish the Reflecting Pool. This caused peeling paint and algae, altering the intended “American Flag Blue” appearance to a greenish hue. Trump, along with officials, reported arrests related to the alleged damage to the pool.
“They went down with probably a box cutter or a very sharp razor of some kind or a knife, and they cut, and then they started ripping it up,” Trump remarked.
Trump criticized the culprits, attributing their actions to what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He emphasized that those responsible should face lengthy jail sentences. The President indicated that some water removal would occur to facilitate repairs, suggesting the involvement of fertilizer in creating algae issues.
Further issues were noted around the Reflecting Pool. Reportedly, acid was poured on nearby grass, causing swift damage. Trump confirmed that efforts were underway to rectify this damage. On Monday, he accused unauthorized introduction of chemicals into the water.
National Park Service workers and contractors were spotted using vacuums to clear algae from the pool bottom on June 18, 2026, at the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial.
The investigation continues as the U.S. Park Police seek more information from the public.
