Investigation Underway After Spanish Soccer Player’s Fatal Injury

The tragic death of Spanish soccer player Jesús de Miguel has prompted an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter. De Miguel suffered a fatal injury during a match, leading to cardiac arrest and his subsequent passing.

Incident Details

The Tenerife forward died after colliding mid-field with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who was swiftly given a red card for the encounter. Despite De Miguel’s pulse being restored en route to the hospital, his condition deteriorated, resulting in his death.

The match was abandoned after the incident, which occurred during added time in a 2-2 tie. Tenerife, based in the Canary Islands, expressed its profound sorrow and called for privacy for De Miguel’s family.

Tenerife wrote, “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”

De Miguel, a Madrid native, began his professional career in 2015 with Leganés B and had been with Tenerife since the previous year.

Reactions and Condolences

Support poured in from various clubs and organizations. Andorra, owned by Gerard Pique, expressed condolences, as did other clubs, the Spanish soccer federation, and La Liga.

Real Madrid held a minute of silence in training, while Espanyol delayed coaching presentations. Condolences came from English clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool, highlighting the widespread impact of De Miguel’s passing.

The Spanish soccer federation postponed several Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches. Such life-threatening injuries are rare in soccer, although there have been past incidents, including the death of a 19-year-old goalkeeper in Spain last year and a Ukrainian goalkeeper in 2001.
