A tragic plane crash in Florida on Sunday claimed the lives of all nine people aboard a Learjet 60, including co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras and captain Jeffrey Gregory. Audio recordings from air traffic control reveal Filgueiras’ final moments as the jet experienced a rapid descent.
Filgueiras, a 20-year-old co-pilot, can be heard in the recordings stating, “722 Bravo Delta, we’re descending 8000 Mayday, Mayday, we’re descending 10,000 ft per minute.” The urgency of the messages escalated as the aircraft, en route from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, crashed in Palm Beach County.
Mikaela Schluth, a longtime friend of Filgueiras, commended her for remaining calm and communicative, even as the situation grew dire. Investigation efforts are now focused on determining whether the pilots understood the storm they faced and if a mechanical failure, such as a broken horizontal stabilizer, contributed to the crash.
Weather data indicates the aircraft encountered a rapidly intensifying thunderstorm cell shortly before pilots reported icing and turbulence. Robert Sumwalt, former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board and CBS News safety expert, noted the potential atmospheric factors, citing icing and thunderstorm turbulence as key scenarios.
Typically equipped with weather radar, Learjet 60s and other aircraft try to avoid hazardous weather. However, this flight faced significant challenges. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) prioritizes recovering the cockpit voice recorder to gain insight into the crash dynamics.
NTSB’s Timothy Monville expressed challenges in retrieving wreckage from the impacted crater on the roadway. Sumwalt remains confident that investigators will uncover the crash’s cause, aiding future prevention efforts.
Victims identified in the crash include Adam Robinson, Helen Sharp, and their two children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina were also passengers. Families released a joint statement expressing the devotedness of Adam and Helen as parents and remembering Charmi and Rachael for their joy and adventure. Anita Maria was noted for her legacy of unconditional love.
