Iowa Senate Race: Turek Gaining Ground with Former Trump Voters

In a closely watched Iowa Senate race, Democrat Josh Turek appears to be making strides among voters who previously supported President Donald Trump. The competition to replace retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst features Turek and Republican Ashley Hinson.

The race remains competitive with recent polls indicating a tight contest. Issues like tariffs, immigration, and voting records have been central in their debates. Additional topics like Iowa’s economy and inflation are also influencing voter decisions.

Latest Poll Insights

A YouGov poll conducted between October 6 and October 12 surveyed 2,245 likely Iowa voters. Turek led Hinson with 47% to 46%. Notably, Turek’s support included some voters who favored Trump in the previous presidential election. The poll’s margin of error is 3.1%.

Other polls have shown varying results. A Suffolk University poll from early October had Turek leading by four points, while a Beacon Research poll in late September showed him ahead by two points. Conversely, Emerson College and CNN polls have occasionally shown Hinson in the lead.

Trump’s Approval and Prediction Markets

The same YouGov poll revealed Trump’s declining approval in Iowa, with a majority disapproving of his presidency. Only 29% strongly approved, while 49% strongly disapproved of his performance.

Prediction markets, such as Polymarket and Kalshi, suggest Hinson has a more robust lead over Turek, indicating different expectations compared to some polls.

Significance of the Iowa Senate Race

The Iowa Senate race is crucial, with potential implications for the 2026 midterm elections. Both parties aim to address voter concerns about the economy, inflation, and foreign conflicts. Iowa’s history of alternating between political parties in presidential elections adds to the race’s competitiveness.

Historically, Democrats have struggled in Iowa’s Senate elections. The last Democratic victory was 18 years ago by Senator Tom Harkin. However, polling has brought some optimism to Turek’s campaign.

Next Steps in the Election

Early voting in Iowa began on Tuesday and continues until November 2. The midterm elections are scheduled for November 3.
