Glen Hansard, an acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter, passed away in a motorcycle accident near Dublin. He was 56. His management confirmed the tragic news, stating the family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken.”
The accident happened in Lucan, west of Dublin, before 4:30 a.m. Police confirmed a man in his 50s died at the scene, without naming him. Hansard’s loss affected many, including fellow musician Bruce Springsteen, who shared his sorrow on social media.
Hansard was known for both his musical and acting career. He gained fame as a cast member in the 1991 movie “The Commitments,” and won an Oscar in 2008 for “Falling Slowly,” a song from the film “Once.” The movie, a tale of two musicians, was later adapted for Broadway, winning eight Tony Awards in 2012.
Beyond his film successes, Hansard was the front man of the band The Frames and part of The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová. His solo work, including the Grammy-nominated album “Didn’t He Ramble,” showcased his talent.
Irish President Catherine Connolly praised Hansard as a leading figure in the Irish music scene, emphasizing his contribution to the live music experience. Actor Chris O’Dowd highlighted his ability to uplift people with his songs.
Hansard began his career as a street performer in Dublin. He was known for leading a Christmas Eve busk outside the Gaiety Theatre to support a homelessness charity. Former Irish President Michael D. Higgins praised Hansard’s dedication to social issues.
In 2023, at the funeral of Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, Hansard performed alongside Lisa O’Neill. His performance moved attendees, illustrating his impact on the music community.
He is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their 3-year-old son, Christy.
