Israeli Forces Seize Beaufort Castle in Southern Lebanon Amid Intensified Conflict

Israeli troops have captured the strategic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, marking the deepest incursion into the country in more than 25 years. This development follows a series of airstrikes and intense fighting with Hezbollah members in nearby villages.

A Significant Advance in the Israel-Hezbollah Conflict

The seizure of Beaufort Castle, located near Nabatiyeh, represents a key moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The fighting began on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel after the U.S. and Israel targeted its key ally, Iran.

Since then, Israel has conducted a ground invasion across Lebanon, capturing numerous villages and towns near the border. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has retaliated with thousands of missiles and drones aimed at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

Historical and Strategic Importance of Beaufort Castle

Beaufort Castle has served as a strategic military site for various armies over the centuries. Initially built as a Crusader fortress in the 12th century, it has been used by many groups, including the Crusaders, Saladin’s Jerusalem army, the Ottomans, and the Israeli military until 2000.

Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the raising of the Israeli flag over the castle, emphasizing its historical significance. Previously captured by Israel in 1982, the fortress was held until their withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

Expansion of Israeli Operations

In recent days, Israeli forces have intensified operations in Lebanon, crossing the Litani River, which previously acted as a boundary. This move has led to the designation of areas from the Litani to the Zahrani River as combat zones, prompting many residents to evacuate.

Currently, Israeli troops are positioned near Nabatiyeh, urging residents there and in Tyre, a major coastal city, to leave due to escalating strikes.

Exchanges of Fire Continue

Hezbollah has claimed attacks against Israeli troops near Bayada, close to the border. Airstrikes in various southern Lebanese villages have resulted in casualties, with Hezbollah firing rockets into northern Israel, including Kiryat Shmona.

The recent Israeli-Hezbollah clashes have resulted in significant losses: over 3,350 fatalities in Lebanon and the displacement of more than 1 million people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed casualties on the Israeli side, including military personnel and civilians.
