Israel’s Investigations into Gaza Incidents Draw Criticism

A recent announcement by Israel’s military marked the start of its first criminal investigations into troop conduct in Gaza. The focus is on the killing of Hind Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian girl, her family, and 15 Palestinian paramedics. Despite addressing these cases, the military decided against probing other attacks that killed aid workers from World Central Kitchen and Doctors Without Borders.

The decision not to investigate those attacks drew criticism from Chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, who publicly condemned it as “wrong and painful.” The killings in question have sparked substantial international outcry. Hind Rajab was reportedly trapped in a vehicle, pleading for help before she was killed in February 2024. The military campaign has led to over 73,000 deaths in Gaza, including many women and children, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.

Call for Accountability

Rights groups and U.N. commissions say the campaign amounts to genocide and deliberate killing of civilians. Israel denies these accusations, citing Hamas’ use of populated areas for military operations. Nevertheless, the military’s statement on Wednesday raised questions, especially as other high-profile killings remain unaddressed.

Hind Rajab’s grandmother demands an international investigation for accountability. She voices the need for justice for all Gaza children. The military admitted to firing at the vehicle carrying Hind and her relatives as they attempted to escape the area. The call for help from her cousin ended abruptly with more gunshots.

Incident Details and International Reaction

After the incident, paramedics found the bodies of Hind, her relatives, and two Red Crescent medics dead. Dyab Abou Jahjah, director of the Hind Rajab Foundation, criticized the investigations, calling them a “charade.” The Palestinian Red Crescent also seeks international investigations.

Israeli troops additionally fired on ambulances attempting to rescue other casualties, resulting in the death of 15 medics. Initial Israeli military statements referred to suspicious activity, but footage later contradicted these claims, leading to changes in military leadership over the incident.

Responses and Further Investigations

World Central Kitchen and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of accountability. Calls for independent investigations continue as military prosecutors assess. Yet, history suggests indictments and convictions are rare. HaMoked and Yesh Din report very low prosecution rates for military offenses in previous operations.

While the war’s toll grows, ongoing military strikes in Gaza keep the casualty numbers rising. Hamas-led militants began this conflict in 2023, resulting in sizable loss and abduction of civilians, propelling continuous retaliatory actions by Israel.
