Issues Arise with Washington’s Reflecting Pool Renovation

Peeling paint from Washington’s Reflecting Pool has generated concerns following renovations initiated by President Donald Trump. Recently, he claimed intentional damage to the site through his social media platform. ‘We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool,’ Trump posted, mentioning damage to both the surrounding grass and the pool’s surface, yet provided no specific evidence.

Despite requests, the agencies responsible for the upkeep of the National Mall, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, did not comment immediately. Observations at the site showed National Park Service employees using vacuums to maintain the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. According to The Washington Post, Park Police arrested an individual accused of peeling paint from the pool, but unclear issues, such as algae in the water and detached blue paint, remain.

Trump suggested malicious activity was involved, stating, ‘No different than the chemicals used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the Reflecting Pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work,’ on Truth Social. His remarks referred to discolored grass etched with numbers ’86 47′ on the National Mall, which authorities investigate as a potential threat. ’86’ can imply ‘getting rid of,’ correlating with Trump’s position as the 47th president.

Oklahoma City Police officers, deputized for local law enforcement around U.S. 250th anniversary events, patrolled near areas where blue paint had peeled from the Reflecting Pool. Trump’s claims arise amidst scrutiny over the pool’s condition. The renovation, costing over $14 million, aimed to replace the pool’s appearance with “American flag blue.” However, an algae bloom soon turned the waters green, prompting federal workers to treat it with chemicals. Now, large sections of blue paint have detached, revealing the pool’s rocky surface beneath.
