Jalen Hurts Placed on Injured Reserve Due to Blood Clot

The Philadelphia Eagles have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on the injured reserve list following a diagnosis of a superficial blood clot. This move means Hurts will miss at least four games.

On Thursday, the Eagles released a statement about Hurts’ medical condition, indicating that he had been receiving treatment for nearly a week. Hurts traveled to and from London during this period and even participated in the team’s London game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite practicing fully on Wednesday, the team announced his absence for the upcoming Sunday game.

On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice, requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report.

During a flight to London and a subsequent walkthrough, an ultrasound on Saturday detected a superficial blood clot. The Eagles’ medical team, along with London-based doctors, reviewed the ultrasound results. They concluded that keeping active and mobile was safe, allowing Hurts to play without limitations on Sunday. A follow-up ultrasound was conducted within 72 hours of the return flight to Philadelphia.

Following these developments, Hurts practiced fully on Wednesday as noted in the practice report. However, a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night showed movement in the small blood clot. As a precaution, Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers while the team assesses the best treatment plan. Prioritizing his health and safety remains the team’s main focus.

Hurts is set to miss games against the Panthers and all three of the Eagles’ NFC East rivals. He could return in Week 11 for a matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. There is a scheduled Week 10 bye, providing a possible timeline for his return.

Blood clots are serious, with the potential to obstruct blood flow to critical organs, leading to conditions like pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. They may also result in tissue damage or prove fatal without timely medical intervention.

Tanner McKee, a third-year veteran, is now positioned to start in Hurts’ absence. McKee has previously started two games, with a record of one win and one loss.

Adding to the Eagles’ challenges, the team has been playing without DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley.
