Jamal Adams, once a first-round pick for the New York Jets, returned to MetLife Stadium on Sunday. He was competing for a place with the Minnesota Vikings. Yet, only two weeks after joining, Adams faced a setback. He sustained a knee injury during the Vikings’ 13-10 victory.
The injury occurred while Adams covered New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III in the red zone. Sprinting to manage Austin’s route, Adams fell on the field. It was a non-contact injury, which often signals seriousness.
The Vikings staff soon brought a cart to take Adams for further evaluation. Head coach Kevin O’Connell commented during an in-game interview. Describing the initial assessment, O’Connell noted, “not good.”
“In such a short amount of time, Jamal has done such an unbelievable job coming here,” O’Connell stated. “You feel his passion every single day.”
Adams was contributing effectively before the injury. His performance included a crucial stop on a Giants run play. However, O’Connell’s remarks on future absence hint at the injury’s severity.
Adams signed with the Vikings before training camp started on July 28. Entering his 10th NFL season, he understood the challenge of securing a roster spot. Previously, Adams became integral to the Jets’ defense after being the sixth overall pick in 2017. His time with the Jets included Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2019, and an All-Pro selection in 2019.
Afterward, the Jets traded Adams to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played for four seasons. His journey continued with the Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, and Las Vegas Raiders before his stint with the Vikings.
Since transitioning from safety to linebacker last season, Adams embraced versatility on the field. The Vikings planned similar use before his injury. Adams hopes that further tests will reveal a manageable recovery, although non-contact knee injuries tend to be severe.
