After 27 years, the beloved cowgirl doll voiced by Joan Cusack is finally taking charge in ‘Toy Story 5.’ Cusack has been influential in shaping Jessie since her debut in ‘Toy Story 2’ in 1999. The character is now the central figure, with Cusack excited about the narrative opportunities for girls.
Over the years, Cusack has lent her voice to Jessie in four movies, two TV specials, a short film series, six video games, and two theme park rides. In this new installment, Jessie leads Buzz Lightyear and Woody against a new adversary—a frog-faced smart tablet named Lilypad.
Jessie’s journey has evolved significantly. Initially, she was envisioned as Señorita Cactus, a sidekick. This plan changed, thanks to insightful suggestions, creating the feisty cowgirl loved by many.
Apart from her work on ‘Toy Story,’ Cusack has maintained a low Hollywood profile, choosing to focus on family. She also operates a gift shop in Chicago, finding a way to balance creativity and home life.
Cusack’s career includes notable roles in films like ‘Working Girl’ and ‘In & Out,’ as well as a stint on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Her proactive input in ‘Toy Story 3’ further cemented her role in shaping Jessie into an iconic character. Her departure from Hollywood for family life and her Chicago gift shop reflects her priorities beyond acting.
