In a significant decision, a federal judge dismissed an effort to halt the scheduled Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta refused to grant emergency relief to two Washington, D.C., residents. These individuals, Susan Douglas and Paul Romano, filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the UFC event. They claimed the upcoming mixed martial arts fights violated White House grounds regulations and that the event’s structure, the Claw, was built unlawfully.
Judge Mehta concluded that the plaintiffs could not demonstrate potential harm from the events, nor could they prove legal standing, which is the right to sue. This decision followed their lawsuit six days prior.
The UFC event, labeled “UFC Freedom 250,” is scheduled for Sunday on the South Lawn of the White House. It coincides with President Trump’s 80th birthday and is part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The Claw, a 92-foot structure housing the Octagon, was constructed over three weeks in preparation for the event.
“UFC Freedom 250” features seven fights on Sunday. Additionally, several preliminary events are scheduled. These include a press conference and fighter face-offs at the Lincoln Memorial on Friday. On Saturday, attendees can witness a ceremonial weigh-in for 14 fighters and enjoy a performance by the Zac Brown Band at the UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest on the Ellipse.
The White House anticipates about 4,000 attendees on the South Lawn and 12,000 more spectators at the Ellipse. The event will be broadcast on Paramount+. This platform is owned by Paramount Skydance, the parent company of CBS News.
According to court filings, the White House undertook significant efforts for the UFC event. Over 700 subcontractors were hired for construction, and the U.S. Secret Service cleared more than 2,000 participants and broadcasters for “UFC Freedom 250.” Andrew Fischer, the director for White House Management and Administration, noted that UFC and its affiliates spent over $60 million on preparations for the weekend.
