Juneteenth: A Growing National Custom

A federal holiday continues on, yet the tradition hasn’t fully cemented nationwide. Observance of Juneteenth, recognized as a federal holiday, signifies a commitment to remembering the end of slavery in the United States. Despite this, the cultural significance is still spreading.

Consider the symbolism of the white oak in my backyard, which stands as a piece of living history. A matured tree’s age is often gauged by measuring the circumference at chest level. Using this method, it is estimated that this oak has the same age as the period marking the close of Reconstruction, around 150 years.

However, this particular tree doesn’t grow uniformly. Its trunk divides into four sections, forming a sprawling, intricate crown. This illustrates that, much like history, the method and choice of what aspects are measured significantly impact our understanding.
