Justice Department Investigates E. Jean Carroll Lawsuits

The Justice Department is examining aspects of lawsuits filed by E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine writer who accused Donald J. Trump of sexual assault, according to The New York Times. Carroll is known for twice prevailing against Trump in court.

The investigation centers on contributions made by a nonprofit established by Reid Hoffman, the LinkedIn co-founder and a Trump critic, to cover some of Carroll’s legal expenses. The precise nature of potential charges remains uncertain.

Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. attorney in Chicago, stated that his office has not initiated a criminal investigation into Carroll. However, the statement did not address Hoffman, who reacted via social media, asserting that Trump’s pursuit of him stems from his support of Carroll’s lawsuit.

Carroll has opted not to comment, as communicated by a representative.

The Justice Department’s inquiry might confront several challenges if it evolves into charges in its ongoing campaign against Trump’s adversaries. Legal experts note that proving financial assistance concealment requires robust evidence.

In 2023, lawyers representing Trump, who was not in office, accused Carroll of hiding financial backing from Hoffman prior to her civil suits. They raised this issue with the judge before the lawsuits commenced.
