Justin Cooper Reflects on Childhood Fame and Family Support

Justin Cooper, known for his role as Jim Carrey’s son in the 1997 comedy Liar Liar, shared insights into the challenges of growing up in the spotlight on the “Not So Little Rascals” podcast. Cooper recounted how his mother played a crucial role in protecting him from some harsh realities of fame.

Early Fame and Protective Parenting

Cooper, who also starred in Brother’s Keeper, credited his mother for shielding him during his early years in the entertainment industry. He revealed that she managed to keep him unaware of certain unsettling aspects, like receiving fan mail from prisoners. “She would tell me later on about, like, prison mail that I would get that she never showed me,” Cooper recalled. Despite such incidents, his mother consistently ensured his safety and well-being on set by never leaving him unattended.

Reflecting on Hollywood parenting norms of the time, Cooper noted, “You know, there’s a lot of acting parents that you hear of back in the day that are just like, ‘OK, ya, go. Do whatever they tell you to do. Bye!’ and my mom was not like that.”

The Strains of Child Stardom

Cooper’s career included working alongside comedic legends, an experience that also involved managing adult behavior around him. He shared a story about his mother confronting Don Rickles, known for his colorful language, while filming Dennis the Menace Strikes Again!. She firmly requested, “I don’t want you to use any language like that in front of my kid,” highlighting her protective demeanor.

Stepping Back from Hollywood

As Cooper matured, the demands of his career began to weigh on him. He described how the routine of auditions started to feel burdensome, impacting his enthusiasm for acting. “You’ve got to sit in the car for 45, 50 minutes to get out there, and then I’ve got to do this, and then I gotta go home and start my homework,” he explained.

His mother, sensing his growing reluctance, offered him the freedom to choose his path, telling him, “Look, if you don’t want to do it anymore, you don’t have to.” This support from his mother led him to ultimately step away from acting.

Personal Growth and Family Dynamics

Cooper’s relationship with his mother evolved over time. While they shared a strong bond during his acting years, high school brought challenges, especially after his mother discovered he had started smoking marijuana. This discovery “put a little strain” on their relationship for a period.

Despite these challenges, Cooper fondly remembers his mother’s unwavering support throughout his acting journey. “Throughout my whole acting phase, she was always there … taking me on auditions, all the stuff, helping me, running lines,” he emphasized.
