Karen Read’s Legal Battle Over John O’Keefe’s Death

Karen Read, once a financial analyst and college professor from Massachusetts, caught media attention in early 2022. This came after a tragic incident involving her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, who was killed in late January.

Read faced severe legal charges in June 2022, indicted for O’Keefe’s murder. She pleaded not guilty to these accusations. Prosecutors claimed she struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV and then abandoned him to succumb to a snowstorm. This followed a reportedly drunken argument between the couple.

Her legal proceedings saw the assembly of a formidable defense team. Among its members was Alan Jackson, known for defending Kevin Spacey in 2019, resulting in Spacey’s acquittal on sexual assault charges. The first trial, which began in April 2024, concluded with a hung jury, leaving the case unresolved.

Read is facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident concerning O’Keefe’s demise. She continues to assert her innocence against these allegations.
