Residents of Kauai in Hawaii prepared over the weekend for heavy rain and strong winds due to the approaching Hurricane Lowell. Despite the impending storm, some residents continued with their holiday weekend activities.
Hurricane Lowell, a Category 3 storm by late Sunday, was predicted to pass near the Hawaiian Islands as early as Monday evening. Forecasts suggested it could bring statewide rainfall of two to 10 inches, with isolated areas in Kauai and Hawaii’s Big Island possibly receiving up to 14 inches.
Lehua Lanning was one such resident who decided not to let the storm disrupt her plans. She went ahead with her baby shower on Saturday evening. The celebration took place under an open-air pavilion in a beachside park on Kauai’s east side. The event featured reggae music and local dishes like kalua pig and smoked meat, enjoyed by about 100 guests.
It was either now or never,said Lanning, expressing her concerns about her baby arriving amidst the storm.
Rain started on Sunday afternoon, prompting Kauai officials to prepare for worsening conditions. Authorities advised residents to remain indoors as the storm approached.
