Kennywood, an amusement park with a rich history dating back nearly 130 years, is strengthening its chaperone policy for the summer season. This decision comes as amusement parks nationwide face challenges with unruly teenage behavior and violent altercations.
Policy Changes
Effective June 12, guests aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. This policy will remain in place until September 7. The announcement is in response to recent incidents at parks such as Six Flags St. Louis and Hersheypark, where large brawls led to police intervention.
This was a proactive measure and part of our ongoing commitment to preserving the welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that has defined Kennywood for nearly 130 years.
According to a statement from the park, adults responsible for minors must be 21 or older and have a valid government-issued photo ID. Each chaperone can supervise a maximum of six guests aged 15 and under. The chaperone must be present upon entry and stay within the park during the visit, although they need not accompany the minors at all times.
Additional Security Measures
Kennywood is enhancing security efforts. Guests must pass through a weapons detection system, and restrictions are placed on allowed bag sizes. Exceptions are made for medical and diaper bags.
The park emphasizes that safety is paramount. Management, along with security, will enforce the policy at the entrance and throughout the park. Guests under 16 without a chaperone may be removed.
Despite enforcing stricter rules, organized groups such as schools or churches, which already have chaperone systems, remain exempt from these changes.
Community Reaction
Public feedback on the revised policy has been positive. Many appreciate the park’s proactive stance, hoping it will prevent potential disturbances. Some suggest implementing a discounted pass for chaperones who do not intend to ride attractions.
Located in West Mifflin, about 10 miles from Pittsburgh, Kennywood opened in 1898. It is recognized as a National Historic Landmark alongside only one other U.S. amusement park, Rye Playland in New York.
