Kevin Kisner Challenges Rory McIlroy’s Intentions in India

Kevin Kisner, a four-time PGA Tour winner, has openly criticized Rory McIlroy’s involvement in promoting golf in India. Kisner accused McIlroy of lacking genuine interest in growing the game while participating in the DP World Tour event in India.

Rory McIlroy, who was in New Delhi for the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, stated that his participation aimed to boost the sport’s popularity in India. Despite McIlroy’s intentions, Kisner remains skeptical. He suggested that McIlroy’s attendance was driven by a desire to earn a significant appearance fee.

“That is such a dog sh-t comment, but I guess for the right price, we could all say that comment,” Kisner remarked on the Fore Play podcast. “He doesn’t want to globally expand in India; he wants to get his 10 million bucks and go play in India.”

McIlroy, a Northern Ireland native, faced criticism for his performance, placing T-42 in the India event. When asked about Kisner’s statements, McIlroy emphasized that he hadn’t been aware of the comments initially. He suggested that earning appearance fees and promoting golf can coexist. He highlighted the massive potential market for golf in India, given its vast middle class.

McIlroy clarified that receiving payment to participate does not exclude the possibility of genuinely wanting to develop the sport in new regions. Kisner acknowledged on the podcast that a guaranteed payday could entice him to play in such tournaments as well.
