The upcoming season holds significant importance for several members of the Washington Commanders. Jayden Daniels, selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, aims to make a strong comeback this year after struggling with injuries in 2025. His performance this fall will be crucial, especially as he approaches contract negotiations at the season’s end.
Head Coach Dan Quinn, who guided the Commanders to the NFC championship in 2024, faces the challenge of bouncing back from a less successful season last year. With the introduction of two new coordinators, the team’s improvement is critical as he enters his third season.
Tress Way, the Commanders’ punter, has a unique perspective on the season. As the longest-serving player on the team’s roster, he revealed to reporters on Thursday that he informed General Manager Adam Peters and Coach Quinn of his plans to retire after this season. “Pro Bowls are sweet,” Way stated in a video posted by JP Finlay of NBC Sports. “Having that the rest of my life, just, a few jerseys hanging up with that will be really special for me. And this year too is special because I am pretty sure this is going to be my last season.”
Way shared that he had a conversation with Peters and Quinn to provide a heads up, emphasizing he didn’t want to surprise them. “It’s just one of those things, taking it all in. Feel like everybody’s cutting onions all the time around here,” he reflected.
Before the season kicks off, Way was named team captain alongside Daniels, receiver Terry McLaurin, linebacker Frankie Luvu, and safety Jeremy Reaves. Way’s journey began when he entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2013. The former Oklahoma Sooners standout joined Washington in 2014. Over his career, Way, 36, achieved second-team All-Pro honors in 2019 and secured three Pro Bowl nominations, including one for the 2025 season.
