King Charles III has confirmed that Prince Harry and his spouse, Meghan, will remain non-working members of the royal family upon their return to the United Kingdom. A letter sent on the king’s behalf to senior government officials states the couple won’t use their royal titles, consistent with their decision since withdrawing from official duties in 2020. Their charitable activities will continue privately, and operational security decisions will be addressed by relevant police authorities.
This communication was dispatched by the Lord Chamberlain, the highest-ranking official in the royal household, to senior government and military officials, as well as lord lieutenants who act as the king’s personal representatives across the country. The letter emphasizes, “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that this information be shared.”
Although the statement merely reconfirms Harry and Meghan’s current status, releasing the letter publicly reflects concerns among some palace observers. There is apprehension that their situation might enable the couple to establish a parallel royal entity, potentially challenging working royal family members.
The issue of security remains sensitive. Prince Harry has had a protracted dispute with the government over reinstating publicly funded police protection, which ceased after their royal duties ended. The government’s Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, will decide whether to restore round-the-clock police protection for the couple.
The Lord Chamberlain’s letter advises that any inquiries from official and state entities regarding the treatment of the Duke and Duchess, especially those involving public funds, should be directed to Buckingham Palace.
