The sudden death of Kyle Calder, a former NHL player at 47 years old, was confirmed by his daughter Madison in an Instagram post on June 15. Calder, who played as a forward, spent a decade in the NHL, bringing his skills to five different teams during his career.
From 1999 to 2010, Calder played in 590 regular-season games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Ducks. Over these seasons, he scored 114 goals and accumulated 294 points, leaving a mark on the sport with his performance and dedication.
Following the confirmation of his passing, tributes and condolences poured in on June 16 from former teams and teammates, celebrating Calder’s life and career.
Calder’s former teammate, Daniel Carcillo, expressed his condolences on Instagram, stating, “Your dad’s warm and loving spirit will live on with thousands of people that he touched, Madison, including me. Beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.”
The Chicago Blackhawks released a statement on behalf of the Wirtz family and the organization, sharing their sadness over the loss of Calder and extending thoughts and prayers to his family.
The Anaheim Ducks echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Calder’s impact as a “great man and valued teammate,” while expressing heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones and those who knew him.
The Los Angeles Kings mourned the loss, highlighting Calder’s contributions as a “consummate teammate” and leader for youth hockey in Southern California, stating the loss is deeply felt within the community.
Patrick O’Neal, a former Kings broadcaster, described Calder as “a great guy,” expressing sadness over the news and extending support to the Calder family.
Chris Pronger, former Ducks defenseman, took to X to express his sorrow, acknowledging Calder as one of several remarkable figures the hockey community has lost recently. He remembered Calder as a “great teammate and friend,” sending thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
