Labor Day Campaign Efforts Ramp Up Ahead of Midterms

Troy Jackson, a seasoned labor activist and logger, emerged as the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine. On Monday, he addressed a union gathering, urging workers to vote to raise the minimum wage and expand family medical leave.Labor Day has never been just another holiday, Jackson emphasized at a Southern Maine Labor Council event. He committed to supporting labor in the U.S. Senate.

Jackson, nominated in a special convention in July, is campaigning to replace Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Democrats see this race as crucial for Senate control. Candidates across the country spent Labor Day energizing supporters as the midterm elections approach.

The campaign season is intensifying as voters prepare for the Nov. 3 general election. Early mail ballots were sent out in North Carolina last Friday.

Doug Born, a union member from Westbrook, supports Jackson, citing his background in labor. I think he’d be the most working-class guy in the Senate, Born said, noting the need for more union representation in leadership.

Sen. Collins did not have Labor Day events but visited Bath Iron Works on Sept. 1. Her focus remains on securing infrastructure contracts and wage enhancements, according to her spokesperson.

Trump’s Midterm Convention

President Trump is also boosting Republican efforts, planning a party convention in Dallas. This atypical midterm event aims to rally support as the GOP seeks to maintain its hold on Congress.

Trump intends to campaign in numerous House and Senate races in the days leading up to the election.

Georgia Democrats Fight for Labor Support

In Georgia, Sen. Jon Ossoff and gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms attended an AFL-CIO picnic in Atlanta. Ossoff criticized the economic challenges faced by workers, linking them to inflation and other policies. He faces Republican Rep. Mike Collins, who promotes himself as an advocate for the working class.

Bottoms encouraged union members to counterbalance her opponent’s spending. Georgia’s ‘right to work’ laws present challenges for union organization.

Competitive Races Across the States

Wisconsin’s competitive House district sees both Republican Rep. Derrick VanOrden and Democrat Rebecca Cooke participating in local parades. Gubernatorial candidate David Crowley also spoke at union events, promoting labor rights.

Ohio’s Democratic Senate nominee Sherrod Brown criticized a system biased against workers. At an Ohio fair, gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton experienced a security incident, highlighting safety concerns on the campaign trail.
